What Makes Insulation Important?
Insulation is key in both residential and Commercial properties to increase the overall energy efficiency. Cooling and Heating of a home for example account for an average of 50-70% of the home's energy usage according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Inadequate insulation can affect your wallet due to major air leakage and also create a space that is uncomfortable to be in every month. This is why having adequate insulation is a must to not only help save money for customers, but to give our customers a healthy, comfortable, energy efficient home or business that either your family or employees can enjoy.
In a home for example, insulation helps combat heat which naturally flows from warmer to cooler areas of the house. Which helps combat warm air from flowing through roofs, walls, subfloors, and other surfaces. Be comfortable in your own home by knowing that your insulation will help keep warm air from escaping during the winter season and help keep warm air from entering the home in the summer. High quality insulation will help save money by decreasing the frequency in which our customers use their air conditioning and heaters. Be comfortable in your home or office all year around by reducing any sort of draft and create more stable temperatures in your space.

How to Choose the Right Insulation
When choosing the type of insulation for your home or business, it can often be confusing since there are many different types of materials and name brands to choose from. Thankfully here at Fontana Insulation, that's where our team of professionals come in to help walk you through, explain and choose the right materials for your project and your budget. With years of experience on our belt, we understand when approaching choosing the correct materials, it is important to look at each property individually for some materials may be perfect for one home but could cause trouble for others over time.
Types of Insulation
There are 4 types of insulation materials that you should consider when looking to insulate your home. Fiberglass, Polyurethane Spray Foam, Mineral Wool (rockwool) and Cellulose. These 4 products have been used for many years and are the only materials we recommend when choosing the best insulation for our customers. Each product has their own pros/cons when deciding on which to use, but we will list the following in order from least to most recommended for our customers.
Mineral Wool (rockwool): Mineral wool is available in the form of batts or boards. It is made by combining melted basalt stone and slag from recycled steel mills and is spun together to create a fiber. Here are some advantages of using Mineral Wool:
Most fire resistant. Rockwool will withstand more extreme heats than the other 3 materials. Water resistant. Much like Fiberglass, Mineral wool does not absorb water. Best for creating a sound barrier. It is primarily used to block sound for noisy areas like machine rooms for example or as a barrier between floors. Disadvantages of choosing Mineral wool would be that Mineral wool is typically more expensive than Fiberglass, since it is not as popular as the other 3 materials. It is also hard to find available in a wide choice of sizes due to its less popularity. Mineral wool is also more dense and heavy, which could be a problem if homeowners ever chose to attempt a DIY project.
Cellulose: Cellulose insulation is created by using recycled newspapers and then chemically treated with ammonium sulfate. If concerned about choosing an environment friendly product, Cellulose is made up of almost 80-85% recycled newspapers. It is one of the most widely used insulation products for both residential and commercial properties and based on our years of experience is a good option for attics if budget is a concern and good too due to its thermal benefits that the ammonium sulfate provides. We at Fontana Insulation feel that Cellulose has more cons due to how messy the installation process can be. As well as over time, most Cellulose manufactures can all agree that the product will settle over the years. This will create a product that needs to be added more frequently, if not the R-value will decrease over time. Cellulose is also water absorbent and can eventually become heavy over time, creating a fear of drywall and ceiling damage. Cellulose main pro is that it is one of the cheapest options for insulation.
Fiberglass: Introducing in our opinion, the most popular type of insulation that a majority of the population can recognize is Fiberglass. Fiberglass is a building material that has been thoroughly tested and trusted for years and years. It has been around since the 1930s and remains a popular insulation option for all projects. Fiberglass is an eco-friendly option due to it being made up of recycled glass that is spun into fibers. It can be installed by using both batts or blown in and for homeowners can be an easy and effective DIY project IF installed correctly. Don't worry about mold or mildew! Fiberglass isn't 100% waterproof, but it does not hold or retain water which makes it easy to be dried off and reinstalled. Another pro is that Fiberglass is extremely fire resistant due to it being noncombustible. Finally, the best quality of this material is it's durability. When installed right and when attics are well maintained, Fiberglass can last many years without needing maintenance. Although it can settle and lose R-value if conditions aren't right, it is easily fixable and easy on your wallet too. Speaking of wallet, Fiberglass is extremely energy efficient and when installed correctly, can reduce energy bills up to 50%.
Polyurethane Spray Foam: Polyurethane Spray Foam insulation in our opinion is the best product when it comes to insulation. When labeling anything the best also comes with a higher price tag which may be a problem for some, but it will present the best return on investment between all of the 4 insulation materials that we recommend. There are two different types of spray foam products: Open Cell and Closed Cell. Each of these will have their various pros and cons, but our team will be able to help distinguish and help choose which one is the best for you.
Between the two Open Cell spray foam is the cheaper option in terms of budget. It is a light material that is designed to break as it expands before it settles. This allows pieces to be removed if needed. Open cell foam can cover more surface area with less product due to it being less dense and will retain an R-value of 3.5-4.0 per inch. Closed Cell however more pricey, will save our customers more money over time due to it being the best energy efficient insulation option in the market today. After application it will hold an R-value of 6-7 per inch, as well as creating air tight sealing and great structural support. Although Polyurethane Spray foam can be almost 2 times more expensive than Fiberglass for example, it consistently outshines all other insulation materials due to its R-value, resistance to moisture, prevent mold or mildew, durability and air tight sealing.
